Former Great Britain Rugby League forward Tony Cottrell has been brought in to throw his weight behind the drive to establish the newly formed Fastflow Energy Services (FES) as a leading gas infrastructure contractor.

The Leigh Centurions star, who built and ran his own utility infrastructure business for more than 30 years before selling up in 2007, was tempted back to the industry by Neil Armstrong, Fastflow Group owner and chief executive, who hopes to make Fastflow’s gas operations as successful as its £30m turnover Fastflow Pipeline Services division, which works in the water sector.

Cottrell said: “An opportunity to launch and grow a business – something I have done successfully before – was a challenge I simply could not turn down.

Fastflow’s team has been held up as a shining example of how going the extra mile can improve customer relations.

Working on the installation and repair of the Northumbrian Water Limited (NWL) pipeline network, Fastflow have scooped the GEM (Going the Extra Mile) Award for customer focus.

The accolade comes after the introduction of a Good Neighbour campaign by Fastflow, which maintains around 450 square miles of the NWL water network, as well as installing meters and responding to bursts and faults.

Neil Armstrong, owner and Chief Executive Officer, said: “This is great news, which shows that our efforts to communicate with people in the neighbourhoods where we work, is paying dividends.

“We understand that digging up the roads and pavements is disruptive but also know that simply doing a good, quick job is not enough. We need to work considerately and people need to be made aware of exactly what is going on day to day, so that they can plan their lives around it.

“We have made a real effort to do this over the past year or so and have received some very positive, unprompted feedback from the public. It’s great that our client is also aware of the steps we’ve taken and has recognised it with this award.”
